Roadside pollution exposure reduction

“We are proud to announce that Roadvent ® is available for installation and stands alone as the world’s first, innovative, pro-active and highly effective solution in reducing human exposure to road based emissions.”

– Thomas Delgado, Inventor, Founder & CEO

About Roadvent™

In 2014, our founder and serial entrepreneur Thomas Delgado, had a thought provoking vision. Whilst walking along a local street that was filled with queuing, polluting traffic, he wondered if an in-road system could be developed that would effectively capture and clean these emissions in a similar way to that of a household vacuum cleaner.

Since the initial thought, we have undertaken 8 years of continuous research, development and employment of leading engineers and scientists. Our company values of “efficiency in everything we do” underpinned every decision.

Our goal was to develop a simple, but highly effective way of capturing pollution as close as possible to its sources (exhaust pipes, tyres and brake pads). By utilising many pre-existing components, we have developed and produced a product that is suitable for installation at all pollution hot spots globally.

Our demonstration installation

Located at the highly regarded UTAC Millbrook Vehicle Proving Ground in Bedford, United Kingdom, our Full-scale installation of Roadvent ® serves as the perfect demonstration facility for all interested parties. For further information or to arrange a demonstration, please get in touch.

How it works

1. Capture toxic emissions

Roadvent captures exhaust gases as well as brake & tyre dust, which contain pollutants such as NO2, NOx, PM2.5, PM10.

2. Filter pollutants

The dirty air captured goes through a multi-stage filtration process, passing through an electrostatic precipitator, activated carbon and HEPA filters.

3. Release clean air

Once the filtration is complete, clean air is released from the top of the roadside air cabinet.

Features

Roadvent pollution intake slots sit discreetly within the top level of the road surface, forming an almost flush finish.

The intakes are pedestrian, cycle, motorcycle and car friendly and are available in a variety of colour and safety finishes – such as highly skid resistant coatings (HFS).

Filtration media can be tailored to our clients specific target gas and pollutant goals. At present our technology has been utilised to reduce human exposure to harmful substances. As all of our systems are built in a modular fashion, we can simply and quickly change components to target other issues, such as adding CO2 removal and storage media to mitigate the negative climate effects road based emissions can have on our atmosphere.

Filtration technology

Electrostatic precipitation (ESP)

Our ESP filtration technology is highly effective. With an efficiency of 98% down to 0.3 of a micron, almost all micron and submicron particles are captured. All ESP filters are removed and cleaned at service intervals.

HEPA filters

Acting as a secondary stage of particle removal filtration after the ESP, in optimum conditions, our HEPA filters remove 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 micron particle size.

Carbon filters

Our carbon filters are the final stage of filtration pre-atmospheric release. These filters work by way of absorption of harmful gases and our range is proven to be effective in removing over 95% of particles down to sub micron levels.

Pollutants captured & cleaned

Particulate matter (PM 2.5 - PM 10)

Roadvent™ captures and cleans dirty air, removing 98% of all particulate matter. We are able to remove particles at this level of efficiency on PM as small as 0.3μm.

Target exhaust gases

Our activated carbon filtration system is highly effective at removing common target gases, such as Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂), Nitrogen Monoxide (NO), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S).

Other exhaust gases

As activated carbon is a broad spectrum filter, we also remove other gases such as Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and Hydrogen Chloride (HCl).

Frequently asked questions

Does Roadvent intake water as well as polluted air?

Yes. Both surface water and rainfall enter the Roadvent system. We have developed clever technology that splits the water from polluted air flow, this water is then pumped away underground, into the normal water drainage systems found in the roadway.

How often do the filters need maintenance?

Filter maintenance requirements are determined purely by the volume of pollutants captured & cleaned on site. In reality what this means is, the dirtier the air, the more often the filters require cleaning and maintenance. The average cycle between maintenance is generally 3 months.

How is the Roadvent powered?

To operate, the Roadvent system requires an electrical power source. We stipulate that all installations must be powered by a clean, green energy source, preferably renewable such as solar.

Solar is not always a feasible option, but all energy supply contracts must be supplied from a ‘green tariff’.

Why do we need Roadvent if we are moving towards sustainable transport?

Whilst many governments worldwide have pledged to ban the sale of fossil fuel vehicles from a future date, these vehicles will still be present on our roads from these dates onwards, therefore exhaust emissions will still be present.

Non-exhaust emissions are also still emitted from electric vehicles, namely from the brake pads and tyres.

There is therefore compelling evidence that pollution capture and cleaning methods are required now and well into the future to prevent unnecessary shortening or loss of life.

Roadvent ® is now available for installation Worldwide.
